The Sharing Place Food Center Social Prescription

The Sharing Place Food Center is providing a tool to assist you with directing people who struggle with food insecurity to community food access. The social prescription can be prescribed to people who share that they have recently struggled with food access, or who are considered food insecure, and recommends a visit to The Sharing Place Food Centre to access a six-day supply of healthy food, each month as needed. There is no means-testing. The community member need only show a form of government identification.

Of the population of people who experience food insecurity, only 23% will visit a food bank, as individuals may not see themselves as someone in need and not seek out the information to access those services. We have found that when community members are provided with a familiar and trusted prescription to access our services, individuals and families experiencing food insecurity will be more likely to visit the Food Bank program and accept assistance.
